Duvet vs. Pillow: Cleaning and Maintenance Guidelines

Pillows can accumulate hair and skin oils, along with dirt and other contaminants, which can create an environment conducive to the growth of fungi. Additionally, dust mites are attracted to unclean pillow fillers, which can lead to allergic reactions in many individuals. To mitigate these risks, it is recommended to clean pillows every three months, especially if you use protective pillow covers, often referred to as bed ticks. These protective covers themselves should be washed at least once a month to maintain optimal hygiene.

In contrast, duvets do not typically become as soiled as pillows, largely because they are covered and do not come into direct contact with the skin as frequently. As a result, duvets only require cleaning approximately once every six months. This less frequent washing schedule helps preserve the duvet’s material and insulation while still ensuring it remains fresh.
